Gratitude Every Day: Simple Ways to Practice Thankfulness This November

gratitude activities for kids

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, November reminds us to pause and reflect on what we’re thankful for. At Academy Childcare Center, we believe gratitude isn’t just something to talk about during Thanksgiving — it’s a habit we can nurture every day, all month long.

Here are some out-of-the-box ways to help your family (and your little ones) focus on gratitude this November:

1. End the Day with Gratitude

Before bedtime, take a moment to share one thing you’re grateful for. It can be as simple as “I loved playing outside today” or “I’m thankful for mac and cheese!” Over time, this daily ritual helps children recognize joy in everyday moments.

2. Create a Family Gratitude Jar

Keep a jar on your kitchen counter and invite everyone to add a note each evening. Write down something that made you smile or something kind someone did. At the end of the month, read them together — it’s a beautiful way to relive happy memories.

3. Practice “Thank You Walks”

Bundle up and go for a short walk. As you stroll, take turns naming things you’re thankful for — the trees, your warm jacket, your family. It’s a simple, mindful way to connect and appreciate your surroundings.

4. Gratitude Art Project

Let your child draw or paint what they’re thankful for. Display these colorful reminders around your home — they’ll brighten your space and your mood.

5. Kindness Countdown

Create a “Countdown to Thanksgiving” calendar filled with small acts of kindness: share a toy, help set the table, give someone a compliment, or draw a picture for a friend. Each act reinforces that gratitude and kindness go hand in hand.

6. Gratitude Dinner Conversation

During family meals, start one question with “What made you feel thankful today?” You’ll be surprised how much even the youngest children can share when given the chance.

Building a Habit That Lasts

Practicing gratitude daily helps children (and adults!) develop empathy, patience, and a positive outlook. By turning thankfulness into a family tradition this November, we can help our children carry that joy into every season.
