Pre-K Skills To Work On Now

This is the time of year that the curriculum starts to speed up in an Early Learning Center and we focus on completing all of the goals of our learning outcomes for the year.   As we head into the spring our focus continues to be ensuring our students are meeting the goals of being school ready as they work towards heading to Kindergarten.

While we are working towards self-help skills beginning in Toddler, the need to continue grows as the child develops.   These skills will be put to the test when our Pre-K students head to Kindergarten.   A bittersweet time for us, as we bid farewell amongst many tears of missing them and pride in all their accomplishments.    Typically, in the Spring you will see Kindergarten registration and then screening.   Here is what we want to make sure your child knows as they head towards graduation at ScribbleTime so they are ready for the screening and more importantly, the first day of Kindergarten:

  • Full Name, the ability to write it and read it
  • Address, the ability to recite it
  • Phone Number, the ability to recite it
  • Food Items, the ability to open and close them
  • Button and Zip, the ability to do this on their own

Another important skill that is beneficial to a child entering school age, the ability for a child to communicate in front of others.   No worries, sometimes with a reserved child it is a little hard.   Kindergarten Teachers know some children are a little reserved and they have a way to build trust with your child and draw their personalities right out!

Also, these are goals, not all goals are met on the day you expect or want.   If your child still needs help, that’s ok, that’s what we do at school as Educators, we educate our students and some need a little more support than others, and that’s just fine.   My Pediatrician told me at one point when I thought potty training would never happen, “Noelle, every child heading to high school is potty trained.”  Thankfully, it’ didn’t take until high school, it was well before!

Isn’t so hard to think of your little one heading to Kindergarten???   It was honestly the hardest transition I had as a Mom, I recall sitting outside the school crying like a baby.   My baby was inside, who would help her?  Would she be ok?  Would she make friends?

I can tell you 18 years later your child will be fine and you will miss these younger days of worry.

Reach out if you need support with school readiness.   We have have a waiting list for the 2021 School year and we’d love to add you!
